I will be getting a police trade-in Glock 17 in very good condition. This gun will be a SHTF secondary gun. I figured the first thing to do would be to replace the recoil spring. What else do you all think? Im getting for about $300.

I think you don't really need to replace anything. But possibly a recoil spring and extractor. I would field strip it an take a look at everything. Chances are everything is fine though.

I would check the trigger pull before I bought it. Some police departments carry a glock with a heavy trigger. (not sure of exact LB - around 10lb)

If you ever happen to be in Georgia, in the vicinity of Smyrna, they will go through teh gun and replace all worn parts as a courtesy.

You can ship it to them and they will do that for you and ship it back if you aren't going to drop by in person. It's a good deal and will give you some peace of mind that the most updated parts will be onboard and in good working order.

Police guns are carried often, but seldom shot. Of course there is the rare occasion where the cop is a "gun person" who shoots for fun. Most cops I know are not "gun people."

The 17 that I bought had a lot of miles on it from holter wear as well as a fairly high round count. doesn't seem to matter though, it's a freakin' Glock. Put new guts in it and it just keeps running.

I just talked to a Glock Armorer a couple of weeks ago who said he had 250,000 rounds through his Glock 17.

Wanna talk about kicking yourself, I used to live in Smyrna, and could have walked there if I wanted (I mean it was 1/2 mile). I didn't know then that they accepted visitors until reading about it some time later, my loss.

My first Glock was a Gen 2 G23 police trade in that had been factory rebuilt. It was a great gun for the money. It had a few malfunctions but as likely to be attributable to cheap ammo or me as an inexperienced pistolaro than the gun itself. I eventually sold it and bought a new G19 for the less exspensive 9mm ammo, this year I added a new Gen 4 G19 to the herd. Anyway, I just wanted to mention if you are a member of GSSF and go to any of their matches they have Glock Armorers that will go through you Glocks at no charge and will often replace any worn parts for free. Check it out.

Recoil spring and extractor. If it is a Gen 1, they have redesigned the extractor to be more reliable. We have G-17's that are training guns. They have 10's of thousands of rounds through them. I believe they recommend recoill springs and extractors every 5000 rounds.
