G17 slide catch problem
Took my wife out to shoot her new Glock. The slide catch keeps locking open the slide every few rounds. Do I need to replace the part or is this a common problem with another fix. Its a lone wolf frame with lone wolf long slide and 9/40 conversion.

Check to make sure it is installed correctly and that the spring is not bound up on anything. Another thing to check is how she is gripping the pistol, to make sure her fingers are not bumping or pushing the catch up under recoil.

Agreed. Try googling some pics of slide release springs attached properly and make sure yours matches. If it does it is likely a thumb is touching the release pushing it up when the gun recoils.

Either problem should be easy fix. Good Luck

Look close and make sure the spring is intact and UNDER the locking block pin.

If it is, stand to the side and watch her thumb as she fires--it may be bumping
the catch when the gun recoils.

Checked it out and it was installed correctly. I tried it at the range because I suspected the thumb issue. I was careful to keep thumbs away. Kinda scratching my head. Maybe I'll just replace the part.

Also, pulling the slide back wouldn't release it. Had to hit the lever every time it happened.

Have you tried different magazines?

It has happened with both 9 and 40 cal mags

I know you said that it was installed correctly, but just for confirmation; release and take off the slide, now look and see if the slide release is laying down flat on the frame or angled slightly up. If it's not completely flat it's installed incorrect. Also, lightly flick the release up a few times and see if it always returns to the the flat position.

It was not returning to the correct position. I took it out, bent open the spring a little and put it back in. It now snaps right back into place. If it starts to do it again, maybe I'll replace the spring?
