I have to agree with berm.

A round trunk of a tree gives very little area to shoot at safely (if the bullets don't go through), you cannot see what is behind the tree, and ricochets have wide angles to travel.

Bales of straw or hay may be good for arrows, but not bullets.

Have your buddy go stand behind a 6" thick tree and pop off a 30/30 at it. That will settle the dispute real fast.

When I lived in WA we had 22lr rounds go past the house from people shooting in the woods behind the house. A couple of rounds from a 45-70 and a 50 muzzle loader into a log convinced them to stop shooting. Woods are not a safe backstop.

it is truly amazing how good a shot murphy is. he is simply amazing and is quite capable of weaving a bullet just right through 250 yards or more of trees and pick that farmer's child right off his tricycle 1000yards away....

berm of dirt
