100% agree with your filosophy.
I did have a Bersa Thunder 380 HC (15+1 cap) and my father an Star 9mm same like yours, both had to sell it for different reasons now I'm saving to buy an Stöeger Cougar 9mm and he too... the goal is be proficiency with your gun, with what you have.
