Default Smart Pistol? Opinions vary.

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2014/02/20/first-smart-pistol-shelves-in-california/

Quote:
The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately. When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.
$1399 for the pistol....plus another $399 for the watch. Seems like a helluva lot of money for a .22 and a plastic watch. Even in a SD caliber, that seems like a lot of trouble to go through to enable it to fire. With your pulse racing in the dark after that loud crash downstairs, I really don't see screwing with a PIN on a watch top be a great leap forward in SD.
In my humble, not very tactical, opinion this a novelty item designed by people who have never had to reach for a handgun in the dark.

Note to Mods: This could have been placed in any number of categories. I decided to put it here and address the "bump in the night" related issues. If it gets political, I apologize in advance.

How will we know it's time to gather up the pitchforks & torches and start assembling the guillotine on the DC mall?

How far (or near) to the firearm does the watch have to be.
I am right handed, and use my dominant hand to grasp a firearm.
But I wear my watch on the left wrist (it is not self winding).

I could not find anything that mentioned the specific range of the RFID setup. I wouldn't count on much more that a few feet.

As soon as the gun loses radio contact with the watch – e.g. if it is knocked out of the shooter’s hand or in case of loss, theft, etc. – it automatically deactivates itself.

Bad idea- for the same reason I do not keep a lock on the fire extinguisher.

No, really- I am sure it will work just fine. Just like this computer of mine. The one that NEVER slows down, NEVER has a glitch, NEVER hangs up, NEVER crashddjdc s;dkjisdfisdfj vj ijsdfjjsd

Prolly pretty easy to make a app for a android phone to scramble certain rfid frequencies. Maybe similar to this http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/16/tagzapper-rfid-washer-rfid-deactivators/

Not to mention this idea was an incredibly expensive and massive flop in the 80's the last time it was tried by gun grabbers trying to end run the right to bear arms.

If someone is rock stupid enough to buy this gimmick they deserve being ripped off.

Just what I need a $2000 pos 22 that can be hacked. Or better yet someone cutting off my hand so they can steal my gun.

better judged by twelve than carried by six.

There is another smart gun technology for police/military applications that sends a radio signal to let someone know the officer/soldier had to use his gun and where he was located when he did use the gun. I can see some police departments testing this technology.
