All the enjoyment shooting brings is not worth one eye!
Shooting a cap and ball musket years back,a copper cap ruptured and entered my shooting partners eye,Doctor said he was extremely lucky.

Mine are about 10 years old. They are prescription, photo-grey, impact resistant, industrial safety glasses complete with side shields. A little expensive; but, I've certainly gotten my use out of them!  | |

the only thing that bothers me is say you're on the street and you're using your weapon, how do you protect your eyes then? you don't have glasses | |

You don't have your safety glasses on when you have to shoot in self defense but you also don't have hearing protection either. You shoot thousands of rounds in practice in hopes of never having to fire a single shot for real. It's the thousands of rounds of practice that are likely to cause you to be hit by stray stuff. As a firearms instructor for a medium sized LE agency (1500), I have been hit by 12 ricochets. Body armor stopped all 12. I got hit by one ricochet while acting as a range officer at an IPSC match I got hit by one ricochet that broke the skin. Not bad but it got my attention. | |

While not a certainty 100% of the time, most quality sunglass manufacturers adhere to the ANSI S87.1
That said, I agree with Robo - shooting a couple of rounds in self defense is not where you are very likely to have to worry about it, but all the time spent at the range increases the chances.

If you are in a situation of life and death, I don't think many people would be very concerned about a possible slight risk of eye injury against probably death.

My 'shooting glasses' are the same sunglasses that I wear on the street almost every day. Both My Smiths and my Oakleys are ANSI Z87.1 rated. My Oakleys saved my eyeballs when I had a Mod Deuce blow up on me. That's good enough for me. | |

I have been wearing Oakleys since 1986 or 1987. They have always turned out a quality product and they have always been ANSI rated. You can't go wrong with a good pair of Oaks....
