When I was in ( 19d then 11b) the term was reserved for the truly high speed spec ops dudes you saw around occasionally. Most I did with those guys was stand guard around a village while they went in and cleaned house very efficiently. ex that comes to mind is blackhawk down delta guy.

all you vets have heard of a "theatre of operation."
those in the theatre operating, are the operators.

I was a real operator. 36Mike. Telecommunications Specialist. I installed and operated telephone and switchboard equipment! LOL.

I'd rather my own son see me die on my feet as a free man, than watch him go, broken, into slavery.

^^^^ this guy, really, probably, the closest to the real thing!! That was the same field as my grandfather, I don't know what they called it in the 50's though. And he used this doodad called a "jitterbug". I still have it around somewhere.

"Operator" came out of Special "Operations" as the easiest way of describing the individual Soldier, Marine, Sailor or Airman without reference to service branch--since all the branches are represented under SOCOM. I think with common usage it's taken on a significance beyond its original intent.

Of the very few SpecOps guys that I have had an opportunity to talk to, I have found they really don't like talking about what they do. Except for Air Force. You can't get my dad and the guys he flew with to shut up.
Of course, they were never looking at anyone in the eyes.

I don't know how you guys remember all that. I can't even remember what year I graduated high school or the year I graduated the academy. I always have to look it up. Hell I have trouble remembering my age sometimes and have to think about it. Maybe it's my ADD or my constant lack of sleep.

yeah they do. they make movies about themselves and have all their gear plastered all over the military channel.
if they stuck to what they were really meant to be, none of you would even know they exist....and after a mission made headlines, theyd fade back into the shadows.

Now that right there is the God's Honest Truth. SFOD-Delta (which isn't even supposed to exist) has its former members writing books ("Dalton Fury," Pete Blaber, etc), and we've already had a book out by a member of the SEAL Team Six mission to kill UBL. And not only that, his real name has been leaked "accidentally." Sure, after putting up with the years of bullsh*t & agony you have to go through to attain Special Operator status it's probably understandable that you'd like a little recognition and appreciation once in a while...but self-promotion and advertising is the antithesis of what you are supposed to be about. We've even had former CIA SAD people writing books and appearing on TV.
It truly amazes me the amount of open-source intel and OPSEC information available on the internet or in published form that our enemies can peruse at their leisure.
