Default Odd Thought

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, but I'll put it up anyway. I had an odd (and highly unlikely) thought. How would the 7.62x54r round function as a HD/SD round? I'm positive the x54r round had been used for SD, but what about HD? Let's say someone has a Mosin Nagant carbine (ie M44, T53, M38) and they were threatened by a home intruder? There's no doubt that it'd get the job done, but what about the practicality? Mosins are relatively cheap, and I can see how it'd be someone's only firearm, and ammo is cheap too, so it'd make sense in that area. But what about other factors? Penetration (over penetration), firing it in the confined places of a home, ect. What do y'all think? Just a random thought I wanted to share!

Better than a pointy stick.

7.62x54R is capable of shooting thru a housing development. I mean ALL of it. Follow up shot time can be measured with a calendar. Would not be my first choice, but better than a golf club.

Whatever floats your boat.

Seriously, in HD you have to consider your environment. Obviously you're going to defend yourself with whatever's available, so to an extent anything goes in an emergency. But 7.62 is indeed an odd thought unless you live in a remote location and need to shoot the guy who's driving away on your tractor.

I live on a farm and keep two weapons at-the-ready...a .357 for inside, a 30-30 and three big dogs for trespassers outside. Probably a good idea to customize your HD requirements based on your situation.

Only if it is all you have ; overpenetration, noise, rate of fire, recoil and maneuvering indoors are all downsides .
IMO a shotgun is the best primary weapon because it is easy to shoot accurately, has great stopping power plus the intimidation factor . A pistol is great as a back-up weapon and to use when you can't bring a shotgun to bear .

It can be argued that a pistol is best if you only have one home defense gun .
NOTE-UMW candidate Jock Yablonski was killed by hit men while running for a shotgun .

I have a Mosin. If I had to use it, I would. But I would use anything over nothing. But if I needed a second shot, I would probably use the butt of the gun instead. Then again, how long is my bayonet? I wouldn't want to be looking at the pointy end of that!!!

I don't use a Mosin for HD, it was just a random thought. I keep a CZ52 by my bed and the SKS can be ready in a heartbeat. Not great HD options but they'll do the trick.
The Mosin has good intimidation factor if you have the bayonet out plus it can be a great pike or a javelin for ranged targets when you're out of ammo and a decent club if need be too. It will over penetrate like crazy, it's loud, if you're familiar with your rifle and it had a decent action then you can get a couple rounds off, it's not very maneuverable (the 91/30 with and without bayonet and the carbines with bayonet deployed). But as stated earlier, it is better than a pointy stick and it's better than nothing a shotgun probably is among the best choices for HD, along with a handgun, or carbine length semiauto (the AR or even an AK) with hollow points or the like loaded in them.

Agreed with the above. A cutoff Mosin known as the obrez in east slavic languages was used for HD and CC by peasants during Russia's civil war and "collectivization". I also saw a picture of one from WW2 Resistance, it is in a museum somwhere (Poland?) An authentic obrez is probably the most collectible and expensive Mosin there is.

I've seen pictures of the Orbez. If the M44 is a dragon, then the Orbez must be a volcano and imagine the recoil! there's no telling what an authentic one is worth.... Probably priceless
