Advice for training brother inlaw
OK to make a long story short my mother and brother inlaw are now living beside me . He is 27 but he has a minor metal handicap , mind of a 18yo basically .Since he is now the man of the house Im going to give him my taurus ultralight 38 spl with laser . Now I have been shooting my whole life but I have never taught anyone before . He has a bad problem with flenching and shooting way way high , he does ok with my beretta but hes not gettin that one  . Any tips or tricks I can teach him ? I plan on both of us going for firearm instruction class
but I want him to know a bit more before he goes , and no mater how much you may think you know you can never stop learning . Btw we were shooting that snubbie @ 25yrd is that too much for a newbie ?

Not a bad idea, so long as his handicap IS VERY MILD, and doesn't prevent him from legally owning a handgun.
My BIL is severely handicapped, I think its severe brain damage, doc says down syndrome and he knows more about it than me, but he doesn't have the physical characteristics of DS, and I've shot with him. I treat him like a child, while trying to give him the due respect of a grown good man.
I won't let him shoot alone (not hard to do, he lives in WV, I'm in MS, and I'm the only one who shoots with him), and I would never let him have/borrow one of mine. My BIL is very emotionally unstable and would be likely to attack family members in a fit of rage.
That being said, having a handicap and being "slow" aren't always the same thing. I've known many who were said to have a handicap and they were just dumb. Now that sounds mean, but it's the truth.
As far as working with him, if you haven't given him a gun yet, don't do it until your confident and have checked out the legal issues. While working with him, emphasize safety more than anything. It's what I did, and you couldn't FORCE my BIL to do anything unsafe now, at least not while he's in his right mind.

Depends on the level of mental issue. Is he just a bit slow, or is it a control issue where he has rage issues?
Truthfully, first question I would have (and no, I wouldn't provide him one of my guns), would be, if he were staying in your house, would you be comfortable with him armed?
If you hesitate, why would you put YOUR self, and your families security, on the line?
If worse comes to worse, you can use walkie talkies and run next door.
Without more information, however, giving you a 'do it this way' answer isn't going to help.
Training an adult is significantly different than training a child, and if you're talking about a man-child, then you have an even more challenging process ahead of you.
(Also, the flinching? Seriously, is he safer with a phone than a handgun? We may all (for the most part) have a RIGHT to bear arms, but SHOULD everyone be armed? There's folks I see regularly out in public that I wouldn't trust with a Daisy BB gun, much less a shotgun.

No no no , noo rage or control issues , lazy ? yes . He is more annoying than anything else . I dont think there is a legal issue at all , his maturity level and learning level is just a bit behind , I talked to one of my swat customers who also does tactical , ccw and basic training and he said he would work with him no problem . i think he is fine , just not on the maturity level a 28yo should be

I've seen that in a friend of mine, his mom got married to some dude who beat the snot out of him every day, and he grew up to just be childish. rough childhood.
It's great you've found someone to work with him. Better for being a professional trainer.

Glad you found someone to help you, but again, I must ask: Would you be comfortable having him sitting in your house armed when you aren't there, leaving him with your family.

Yes I would have no problem leaving him there , He plays every sport under the sun so I know he can learn. The main thing I have taught him so far is to keep your finger off the dang trigger until your ready, all my guns stay loaded , never point at anyone you dont intend to shoot. But he can some how shoot a berreta 9mm and make it not cycle ?????? I have yet to figure that one out lmao
