what could be used to fill in engravings on a slide? looking at a metro arms 1911 but dont like the logo and other stuff on the slide. i would duracoat it after filling it in.

If you know anyone who works in a machineshop, you could see if they would be willing to fire up the surface grinder for you- If not, sanding is about it as far as i know-

JB Weld is just epoxy with metal dust added.
Duracoating requires media blasting to properly adhere to a surface. If you blast a part with "filled" lettering, the blasting media will abrade the softer epoxy more than the surrounding steel-making the lettering show.
Block-sanding with a fairly coarse grit paper, rather than blasting, might work before painting.
ive never done the sanding method before, but to me it would seem that you could see the recess where you sanded down the engraving. like the slide curves in the middle
