I'm familiar with carburization, boriding and nitriding, but I had to Google bone and charcoal. Seems pretty interesting. I always wondered how they got the really neat coloring effect on old rifles and pistols.

Do you recommend bone and charcoal for modern firearms?

It all depends on the steel. I've got some pretty good examples from new steel. If you go to http://www.gunblast.com/FiringPin.htm
you will see an example of a Winchester 94AE .44cal. that I refinished.
