Worse Case Scenario - Nuke

Let's not really go into the details of how it happened, but let's say it did happen. An area near you (a likely target such as a major city) is devastated by a nuclear detonation. What is going to happen to you? Will you survive, will you be killed instantly, or something in between?

Well, I found a site that will give you a good idea of what could happen.

http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

Give it a try. There are plenty of option to test different scenarios. If you can, post a screenshot or a pic. I'd (and most likely others) would be interested to know what would happen in different areas in different situations.

Note: I'm not saying this is likely to happen, or will happen. This is solely for the sake of discussion.

About 90 miles away for me is Anchorage. Trade winds keeps me from losing all my hair. Poor Art.

Yet another advantage to living in Bumfugg. Apparently I wouldn't even know it happened.

I detonated the bomb at Ramstein AB, which would be hit. I am screwed. Anna, you know of any nice four bedroom houses in Alaska?:p

If you would ever meet or just see my family, especially the girls, you would not suggest living off the land. Me, yes. :D Family, no:o

Dallas would be a possible target for a nuclear attack in my area. Should a B-83 (largest nuke in current US arsenal. 1.2 megaton explosion) detonate in Dallas on the ground, the results would be devastating to say the least.

The fireball from such an explosion would be 0.84 miles in radius.

The air blast radius (20 PSI) would be 1.43 miles, and could heavily damage, or even destroy concrete buildings. Fatalities within this area near 100%.

The radiation radius (500 rem) would be 1.59 miles. Fatalities are 50%-90% without medical treatment. This is only from the acute effects.

The air blast radius (5 PSI) is 2.92 miles. This is enough to cause most residential buildings to collapse. Fatalities are still high.

The thermal radiation radius (3rd degree burns) is 7.18 miles.

Here's what the fallout would be like. (15 mph wind)

1000 rads per hour - 42.5 miles maximum spread. 3.51 miles width. 183 square miles effected.

100 rads per hour - 113 miles maximum spread. 24 miles width. 2,260 square miles effected.

10 rads per hour - 183 miles maximum spread. 44.6 miles width. 6,570 square miles effected.

1 rads per hour - 253 miles maximum spread. 65.1 miles width. 13,120 square miles effected.

The radiation could effect areas as far North as Tulsa Oklahoma. As far East as Ruston Louisiana (34 miles from Monroe). As far South Houston Texas and (parts) of San Antonio Texas. As far West as Colorado City Texas (100 miles from Odessa Texas).

There is an estimated 191,390 casualties and 249,340 injuries within the first 24 hours. (Does that sound right? Seems kind of low to me.)

A close up. Depending on which way the wind is blowing that day, I could either be ****ed, or just fine.
