I would think the .270 would be up there somewhere. It's an extrememly poplular hunting round. when I was a kid (in the 70's) and in the years when my dad was a kid, the .30-06 was the common mans cartrige. It was a jack-of-all-trades kind of round and poor rural folks that could only have one rifle usually went with a .30-06.

Of all the hunters I know and meet, I don't think any of them still use the 06, but a lot shoot a .270. I shot a .243 for years even into my early 30's. I never needed more and I never had game get away if I got a shot off. Today my dad and I both shoot Winchester model 70's in .270. With the synthetic stock I honestly think it's only slightly harder than my old maple stocked .243 with regard to recoil. But the kinetic energy the bullet delivers is much higher. I had never seen a deer actually be knocked down from the bullet impact, but then I always try for a broad-side cardiac cavity shot.

I still hunt with 30-06 for several reasons, knockdown, availability, cost and the fact that I dont own a 'hunting' rifle, I use an M1...;)

I'm surprised .38 special and 30-30 were not mentioned.

ooops forgot the .22 LR that will make an even 10

aandabooks 09-03-2012 03:42 AM

.22lr, 12ga, 20ga, .223, .30-30, .30-06, 7.62x39, .45 ACP, 9mm and .38.

I have a gun chamber for all but two of these rounds. 7.62x39 and .38. Not in a particular order and the .38 got put on my list because of how many have been issued for law enforcement over the years.
