I think a root cellar is a great idea.

I'd start with 30 days of food & water for the house.
After that I'd plan a BoB/GHB.

It takes time, but you'd be surprised how quickly things add up
if you buy a little each week.
And most people have the basic items for a GHB (get home bag) already
laying around the house.

We forgot the most important thing on the survival kit list.....DUCT TAPE!! Can't rebuilt with out duct tape
