Tell that to the 12 dead people from the Aurora CO Theater shooting.
Besides its not just people "going postal." There are armed robberies and home invasions in my city. Even the occasional car-jacking. When my baby girl was six months old a creep broke in in my wife at 4:39 PM in the afternoon.
My wife has a Walther PPKS (.380)

Not at least having a gun for home defense is silly if not downright stupid. I don't carry at work, but my vehicle makes a nice "rolling holster."
When not at work,, I carry.

Also as you approach retirement you appear to he be an easier victim to criminals. I won't be.

I totally agree with carrying for self defense, it was more a statement of how you actually expect to use the weapon. What is your mindset, are you carrying to protect yourself from a petty robbery or the zombie apocalypse? Speaking of which...

I have a relative who owns a Minigun M134, so that gets mounted on top of the wife's Tahoe. 4 seconds later when I'm out of ammo I'll go for a Ruger Mark III and SR-22. I can carry a bazillion 22lr rounds.

I expect to live my entire life without having to use a firearm in self defense. If it does come to pass I expect it will be in defense against a criminal. I enjoy shooting my guns at the range so that is a use I enjoy while sharpening my skills. Shooting is a diminishing skill that deteriorates without practice. I love my Ruger Mark III 22/45 LITE. I learned to shoot pistols with my Dad's old Ruger Mark I.
