Many martial arts that teach sword will get you from zero to black belt without ever touching a real sword, you'll do the whole thing with wood and bamboo swords.

Actual cutting is a whole other animal. Schools that train for cutting (mostly Japanese) will focus on technique as opposed to running melee attacks, and the cut will be brief. If you check out an old school samurai movie, all of the duels were done in one or two movements. You cut, you miss, you die.

Wrap a 3 or 4 inch diameter green bamboo in two straw (tatami) mats, the mats are soaked overnight. Wrap it tight, take a cut. I'm told that formula approximates the skill, speed, and strength it takes for a decapitation...

Bayonet training is always fun. Close quarters combat with a Kabar is a joy. I too would recommend you start with Olympic strip fencing Foil. Then Epee. Try Saber if you like getting smacked in the face by Europeans until you teach the a-holes a lesson in Love, American Style! Move on to Western cut and thrust weapons through the various SCA and/or MMR, etc., groups locally if you can.

You'll find you can study and workout on your own and practice with other like-minded intersting and interested folk.

Is this thread missing something? Like a balance between the damage a sword can do, and the need to wield in a close space, with immense power and speed of strike?

Like a Kukri?

Funny story behind that clip. A big fight scene was in the script, but because Harrison Ford was suffering from dysentery and kept soiling himself (and that's real sweat by the way), he just pulled out the pistola and popped off a blank. Swordsman just totally went with it.

That is according to an interview with HF I saw on TV a few years ago.
