Hell just get an Arrow t50 or t51 and make sure to get the longest staples you can fit in them.
Or
Just do it like Rambo and bite the bullet out of a military 308 cartridge and pour the powder in the wound and light it on fire. No screaming like a little girl allowed. That is how a real man would do it.
After being a combat life taker and a RVT I am not one for closing wounds in a dirty enviroment. packing it with some sterial gauze and cleaning with a 10% bleach and water solution and alcohol would be better. If you close a wound and don't get it cleaned really well you are just sealing in an infection and putting it closer to your bone and blood stream.

Try your local feed store...they often have vet supplies. As previously stated, a dirty wound is an infected wound...in time....you WOULD BE BETTER off leaving it open, so it can drain rather than sealing it up....makes for a nasty scar...but the alternative is getting a systemic infection (sepsis or blood poisoning as they used to call it). Untreated....you will most likely be pushing up daisies. You'll need IV antibiotics for that...pills won't cut it...it would be like peeing on a large gas fire.

The staple gun doesn't expire. Butterflies, or rather the adhesive, will.
If stopping the bleeding is the issue, Quickclot is the current OTC state of the art.
Duct tape is the man answer, and if you can get the camo pattern tape, your gaping wound won't give you away.

FWIW, Quick Clot, developed here in VA at Medical Colelge of VA, is being pulled. Annouced this morning. Problem with blood clots forming in other parts of body when used on open wound. REAL men use 4 ought silk and a needle!

Will a heavy duty Stanley stapler work? I have one of those.

This is correct, I removed 14 staples from my arm using wire cutters... THAT WAS NOT FUN!

I was taught that if only dicey closure methods are available, you leave the wound open so blowflies can lay their eggs. The maggots will eat the necrotic flesh and stave off gangrene.
Have you considered Krazy Glue?
