Say I have no gun oil... what do I do.
So, a friend and I were discussing a hypothetical class 4 zombie outbreak (I swear, the Zombie Survival Guide is hilarious), and we came to the realization that, eventually, if you survived enough, you would run out of gun oil.
Now, my friend swears up and down that you can use olive or canola oil in firearms and it would work just as well as gun oil for cleaning and preservation purposes.
I think he's full of it, but I can't put my finger on why.
So, I decided to post here and see: if you couldn't get any Hobbe's or Remington gun oil (by which I mean "a product specifically designed as an oil for guns), what would you/could you use, and would it be safe?

5W-30 mobil one synthetic motor oil works great---and in a pinch I think
automatic transmission fluid would be fine too. Darned near anything is
better than nothing. Heck---render out a couple of zombies.

Cooking oil??? Only if a zombie is banging on the door and the bolt is seized. Vegetable oil does not have the heat tolerence need to retain viscosity, meaning it will gum up very quickly and cause more harm than good. Any auto or machine oil will do the job, a gallon will last decades so the chances of running out are slim. In the wastelands you will have to loot from to survive every garage and crankcase is a bonanza.

motor oil, transmission fluid, etc.
Any kind of petroleum based lubricant would work.

Motor oil, ATF, cooking oil. Castor oil (from castor beans- keep a few growing in the back 40- repels moles, can be used as motor oil) However, for my muzzleloaders, I can use lard or beef tallow quite well, thank'ee.

I'd use what I use for everything, the blood of my enemies.

Quoted for truth. It's the best stuff I've used. I don't even bother with gun oil anymore. A quart will last quite a while.
