Rope for a survival Situation
What most people recommend to put into a survival kit is 550 Paracord and ive got alot of that but its bulky and while it can be sperated into 8 different stands without much trouble its still bulky and somewhat heavy
what about tossing a spool or two of braided fishing line with a 50-80lb test limit? its lighter and packs down to a much smaller size any thoughts? |
Survival of what? Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough...?
|
just a general kit for survival like being lost in the woods and needing to build a shelter
just seems to me that you could carry a much longer length of braided fishing line compared to the same weight of paracord |
550 is the way to go for lashing with regard to weight and strength. Hig test line has its place as well, so IMO both are needed. Lots of assumptions in this answer, but 550 is a must in any kit.

550 is heavy?

EHCRain10, how much of it do you have in your bag that it's bulky and/or heavy?? |
was planing on around 150-200ft of 550 cord but was looking at fishing line and the thought just crossed my mind for the people who like to travel really lightly
just seems that you could carry alot more in the same space for the same weight |
If the gut is left in 550, it has something like a 700 pound breaking strength. It's also much more wear resistant than fishing line. In a pinch a length of 550 could be used for ascents and rappels. I wouldn't try that with fishing line.

I'm just having fun with you, it is 550lb rated though. However I am confident it will go a bit more. regards |
