I don't see a single event as the SHTF scenario, I believe it may be a series of challenges that continually weakens our society and supply abilities.

Here is my list with no ranking for probability:
1) EMP
2) Pandemic
3) Natural disaster
4) Conflict with China
5) Regional electric grid disruption
6) Financial meltdown
7) Internet hack
8) Meteor strike............................................ .......

Whenever I tell peeps I'm a prepper, they immediately think of the idgits on Doomsday Preppers. There's a difference between those idiots and real preppers.

My prediction

1. no, Not gonna happen

2. possible. not likely, but quite possible. no way to prepare for it.

3. The most likely scenario, I believe. Can be prepared for.

4, one chance in a trillion. Not in either country's interest.

5. Short term, likely. Long term, not likely at all

6. Quite possible. Short term, not TEOTWAWKI.

7. No major disruption. Repaired in a day or two.

8. possible. but a year or more advance warning for a major event.

Any way, that's my groups predictions.

My friends and I are much more concerned with civil unrest caused by poor economy, creeping socialism, massive unemployment, unrestricted immigration, and rampant crime as a result of the above.

In my opinion, probably the greatest threat we face today is the invasion from Mexico and the middle east.

But the biggest problem is not how much water to store or what caliber of rifle or pistol to take with. The biggest problem as I see it is that there is a lack of understanding the KNOWLEDGE is the most important thing you need.

Most items that we think we need are used up or gone in a short matter of time. Carring hundreds of lbs of equipment and supplies, will get you killed, you car/van/suv will be of no use to you. Carring water is not only time consuming but heavy and will slow you down. So what do you need?

Well when you get dropped in the middle of the jungle in Panama, the only thing you take with is your clothes on your back and a hunting knife, that is it. You do have a vast knowledge of information on how to survive and are expected to use it.

The problem with living in a push button world is that the buttons will not work in a SHTF environment. What you need is knowledge, get all the books you can carry from the library on survival and read them then teach them to your family for they can survive incase something happens to you.

Then drive your van or suv to a national forest with no equipment in it and try out your survival knowledge, build a leanto, start a fire without matches or lighters, trap or snare small creatures for food or find grubs to eat, just don't get stopped for hunting without a lic. or out of season. Learn how to get water from plants, how many calories you need each day to survive, what plants are edible and which are posionous. How to navigate without a compus or GPS unit, which way streams flow, how to spear fish, how to make a teepee, how to make a stone ax, how to make spears, what plants can be used as string and how to make rope. How to deal with wild animals, how to tell the weather from the smoke from your camp fire. How to carve out wooden bowls, spoons and how to make knives and axes from base metals (iron) or from stone. Which caves will be safe and which will not.

If you are going back to the Stone Age, you should learn how to live like a Stone Age Cave Man.

Jim
BTDT... Canteen, knife, map, compass, and the clothes I was wearing. After a couple of days, tree bark and lichens seem mighty tasty. Also, nobody is a "vegetarian" when critters are available.

Going hungry definitely affects your judgement and straightens out your priorities in life. Sleeping on the ground at night isn't much fun, either, and cold but you'll live (if you build your shelter right, that is).

With the fact that our president seemingly wants the US dollar to go under and with some of the new laws CISPA and another one he is pushing for use of FEMA camps as terrorist holding areas. And from some of the things I saw after the Boston bombings as far as "martial law". It gives me an uneasy feeling.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

SOMEONE was having a romantic, in the classical sense, night.

Wait -- I hear an idiot following me who'll post something that he's too ignorant to be embarassed by which we all ignore.

the only true idiot is the one who posts nothing but caustic and sarcastic remarks and provides no real concrete information on a subject. something that some here have become quite adept at since joining the forum.

some are pretty good at ignoring others who have more valid opinions and comments and it embarasses them. especially when they haven't learned to debate in a civil manner without resorting to insults and derogatory statements when they are opposed on subjects.
