Radio Communications
If cell phones and land lines go down, radio is going to be the only way to communicate over long distances. How many of you are HAMs?

I would love to get a ham radio but funds won't allow it right now

I will be before the elections. I have a 50 foot tower erected here now, and as soon as summer farm chores settle down, I will test out. My equipment is in a buddys basement, waiting on me to get the ticket.
Also, I have a 16 foot enclosed cargo trailer, that is going to get modified, and a number of the fellows in this area are going to contribute equipment, one guy is offering a generator, so that we will have a mobile command center if the need arises, we can simply hitch to the trailer and roll to a disaster and re-establish communications.

There is an issue with getting a license. My personal information is now public domain under the FCC so a quick Internet search yields my home address and cell number.

So many government agencies have my ID and fingerprints, that one more wont make any difference.

When SHTF and the Gov. cronies start to come, your Ham Lic. will be a bullseye on your location. I personally would not want to be licensed when SHTF. I do have my communication abilities though. It's called underground radio.

MasterPsmith, tell us more about this underground radio.
My Father-in-law recently sold my mother-in-law's ham stuff. He got only a couple hundred for it all, no tower, though. You could always get it, and if SHTF you won't need a liscence to run it.

We have a CB base station in the house, and a mobile unit rigged up in our farm truck we use to haul firewood / trash / feed / etc. around on our property. My parents, and brothers all own property within a 5 mile radius of us. We can usually talk to them, and a few other people on neighboring property's. Kind of like a neighborhood channel, that stays fairly active. Not nearly as powerful as a HAM radio. But we use it alot.
