I used to joke around that I couldn't afford to store enough food and supplies to survive The End Of Civilization As We Know It, but I could afford to store enough guns and ammo to take it from those who had.
Then I actually starting making some basic preps, and got to reading up on the subject and joined a couple of prepardness forums, and found out how much "Preppers" hate that type of comment. It is NOT amusing to them, and I have come to share this view. Anyone who would advocate looting rather than preparation is sort of morally reprehensible. Sure, anyone who finds themself in a desperate situation may try desperate measures to survive (however, most serious preppers are pretty determined to protect themselves, and they also have guns and ammo stockpiled), but to make a decision such as this prior to the **** hitting the fan, and when there is still time to prep --- not kewl in prepper world.

Yup. Lock your doors, bar your windows, post a guard, lock-n-load, and if you fire do so for effect -- The Mr. McCool's of the world failed to be prepared but lucky for them you didn't. See post #15...

I know that for many who read this I'm preaching to the converted, but . . .
Not sure if this is on the subject or not, and I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but it's never too late to start, and ANY preps are better than none. As mentioned in a prervious post, it's relatively painless to build up a decent stockpile by buying a few extra canned goods each week; instead of one jar of peanut butter, buy two; dried rice and beans are cheap. Buy a little extra of what you eat, then rotate the stock.
I am not "stockpiling" to survive indefinately after a SHTF situation; rather, it is to give me a little time, a little breathing space to get my response to the crisis together.
Besides food? Go to the local dollar store - five emergency candles for one dollar. Look on craigslist -- a used Coleman camp stove for $15.00. Look at the local Goodwill or thrift store -- a backpack for $10.
There are tons of FREE books for download on the internet about first aid, food saving and preparation; building shelters, or general surviving.
If you can spend an extra $20.00 per week you will be amazed at how quickly you can gather up basic supplies that will make coping with a diaster much easier, perhaps to the point of saving your life. But even $10.00 per week for a couple of months will give you a significant leg up on surviving a crisis.

I have plenty of guns and ammo for each... Not completely stocked up but enough to hunt and defend my family.
I have 7 boxes of MRE's
Blankets random gear for survival and packs and frames to carry it along with medical supplies.
I do however need to look into small portable stoves and lanterns and such. I'm probably a 2 1/2 right now

Your greatest prep is your mind! Read James Wesley, Rawles excellent book: The End of the World as We Know it.
Then you might enjoy some of his other reads also, they can be enlightening.
