As with war, you're not going to be able to save everybody. Unfortunately many will not survive. You help those you can, when you can, the rest will have to count on God to save them. Compassion for those suffering will have to be tendered in small doses if you and yours are going to survive the crisis.

I forgot the Bunker double secret password, but I still got the Bunker goat can I come?

Mostly it breaks down like this.

Type of SHTF will dictate actions.

Always close family first then close friend then community.

Ethics in the sense of obeying the laws? Having integrity, which is to me doing the right thing when nobody is looking?

I think that those who don't think twice about swiping a candy bar or a pair of socks today will be willing to take as much as they can from wherever it can be found when things get really tough. I would salvage from obviously abandoned vehicles and buildings. I am trying to have a cushion of supplies that I can share. My main focus, however will be on supplying my family with food, shelter, and security. As said before, family, friends, community.

Ever read the parable of the ant and the grasshopper?

Natural disasters are poor analogies. With a natural disaster you know the hurricane, flood, or blizzard will eventually be over, and somewhere the lights still come on, and the toilets still flush, and McDonald's is still serving millions of heartattacks.

When (yes, I said when) the S truly and honestly HTF and there aren't any lights you don't make yourself, you flush the toilet by using a spade, and happy meals are a distant memory I assure you your code of ethics will come second to making sure your loved ones survive another day.

Community building is great until the community decides you've got more than you need and they're damned hungry.

Along these lines, any community will get around to government some time in their future. As with any and every government comes rules and laws for the good of all. With them rules and laws comes decent and oppasition, with a possability of violant resistance. Sorry for the bad spelling and grammer I am not on my computer and this one is anchent even by DELL standards, not even a spell chacker.

I'll agree with that to a certain extent. And by no means am I saying it cannot/will not be done.
John Ringo explains the community dynamic (why it'll work in some instances, and fail miserably in others) very well in his book The Last Centurion. Fiction, but very thought provoking.

Ethics? If you didn't have them before the SHTF, your aren't going to grow them afterword.

You can't feed everybody, provide everybody with shelter, water, sanitary facilities, medication, etc. Tough choices will have to be made when a neighbor, who has not prepared, comes to your door or camp with his/her family asking for help. Then there are those who are willing to take your life and that of your family to get what you have.

No offense to anybody's religious beliefs, but i think the role reversal of everybody knocking on the Mormons' doors will be damn funny. Those folks pack for trouble.
