One gun?: I don't know and I've been asking myself that same question for way to long.

Well, I've really been thinking about this recently. I pondered and pondered about balancing self-defense with hunting. I just about came to the conclusion that I should carry two guns with my bug-out gear. One 22LR for small game and another one for self-defense and big game.

I just had an epiphany though and realized that my Remington 870 can do both perfectly, just carry different shells. Then I looked at this thread and see that several people already figured it out.

Remington 870 it is for "one gun"!

I ask my wife the question on one gun. She said 870. She said home defense 870, small game 870, turkey 870, ducks and geese 870, deer 870. No brainier.

What are the parameters? Is it one gun for shtf or one gun for general use? If shtf, what kind? Few people left or marauding BGs?
General use: 357 revolver. Versatile and concealable.
Few people left: 22 rifle. Light weight, ammo light weight, fairly quiet and accurate. Preferably suppressed.
Marauding BGs: 12 gauge. Versatile and nasty out to 50 yards or more with slugs.

Default 12ga Range

I see a lot of votes for the 12 ga., and understand why, but I just don't think I could give up the range of a rifle for 12 ga.? Not to mention less ammo because of the weight and size. I have no idea what one rifle I would go with but it would be a rifle.

I think I've finally decided on my mini 14. Lots of ammo, can take most game, can put plenty of rounds down range quick, and good to about 400 yards. I think that would be the one gun.
