One thing I struggle with is the 24/7 patrolling; our family has a cabin and you can't see it from the main road but we would need someone up high watching to see if anyone is coming up. I just can't imagine someone being outside in January in the middle of the night.

I too live on the edge of the boonies. As a student of people watching it is my opinion that the people who went to the Mts. will be coming back after 2 days. (The power of a unhappy wife or girlfriend). The armed drug gangs will still be looting the low hanging fruit. Malls and stores. I have many years experience working with some of the worst gangs. You will only need to worry about a few strays coming your way at first. Find some friends who can't run to the Mts. Invite them to come to your place so you can set up a 24 hour watch. There are plenty of great ideas in this section on early warning systems. I don't plan to head out in the event of civil unrest until it gets within 5 miles of our neighborhood. The well armed people returning from the Mts. will soon be back in town and engaging those gangs.
