Problem is, after you've been shooting awhile, you will have quantities of different types of the same caliber ammo. 55 grain this, 62 grain that, etc., and FIFO starts to lose ground...
That's why I stick with one brand and type, for each purpose.

Ok guys great input. Now for a follow up question, what is y'alls opinion on a number of magazines for each gun should be kept on hand?

Three for each! Come on that's enough ammo to do the job short of a stand off with poncho vila , if you are more worried about that sorta thing than forget small arms ammo and invest in claymores lol

I like 3 for my pistols, but for my semi auto rifles I have 6 for each but plan on getting more mags for my AR just cause that is less time I have to deal with loading mags when I go to the range.

There is no such thing as too much ammo. I try to keep as much as possible. (which is hard when all your guns shoot pricy ammo. That will change soon. )

Magazines?

One is never adequate. Ever. Period. Gave a girlfriend a spare for her Marlin 795 .22 for Valentines Day when I was breaking up with her.

For a sporting arm three if reasonable.

For a CCW/service type handgun I'd say minimum of three but four to six is better. I number them and rotate one quarterly. Where I'd carry one or two mags in total I have five, and where I'd carry two or three I have six, generally speaking. I even have spare springs for some to replace when old and weak (the mag moreso than me).

AR or AK or something like that? I have scientifically determined the minimum number of working mags is eight -- eight shall be the number. Loadout of six plus one, and a spare for the one that really "don't"/won't work at some point anyway. Multiples of the same gun? As long as you have one loadout and a spare plus three for each other complete working gun I feel you're basically covered.

Sorta like ammo though, is there really "too many"? I guess...

You picked a hell of a day to break up with her.

U can't have to much ammo. Ever! Its a investment.
As far mags go, 3 ea factory mags. High caps, as many as you can afford. Think of what they will be worth if they are banned. Not to mention if shtf !

Track what is fired on an annual basis and multiply by the amount of years a person wants in reserve.
How's about 5 years as a starting point, for example.
