Author Harlan Ellison describes the zip guns used by gangs in 1950s New York City as being made from tubing used in coffee percolators or automobile radio antennas, strapped to a block of wood to serve as a handle. A rubber band provides the power for the firing pin, which is pulled back and released to fire. The use of such weak tubing results in a firearm that can be more dangerous to the shooter than the target; the poorly fitting smoothbore barrel provides little accuracy and is liable to burst upon firing.[1]
Sounds about right. Seems like I was watching the history channel when I heard that. I think they still make them. (of course they do a better job now I would expect)

I personally don't like Mosins, dont know why. Not that they aren't fine rifles, I just never really liked the look of 'em.
Couldn't get passed that.
Now a nice Mauser on the otherhand, is a thing a beauty.
I found myself rooting for the mauser in "Enemy at the Gates" for that reason

Bud's Gun shop has some 1911's that I have been considering. Would have to go with a bare bones sort of deal and build it up over time.

Armscor Rock Island M1911a1 GI 1911 for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $387.00

I've been eyeballing that'un. Course it's out of stock, though I am a bit wary of paying only $387 for a 1911.
