My standards on defense shells are quite the opposite of everyone else's. Most prefer lower recoil & tight patterns, I prefer max dram with high spread. I don't plan on missing & I don't plan on him getting back up.

I load a DB with 18 1/2" Barrels with # 1 buck .Have shot paper with a lot of different loads and just like the # 1 Buck better. If I didn't have # 1 would go with 00 I have plenty of them

Get some scrap drywall and run your own tests. With 4 people living in my home, I don't want pellets penetrating the walls. Some might be surprised at the results. I'm loaded with birdshot.

Ps. Take some fruit to the range and shoot at 7 yards with buckshot and birdshot and see what you think.

Right now, My mossberg 500 12ga has that 2 3/4" winchester "military" 00 buck [00 buck is 00 buck, used by civilians, military, and police], however, i would like to get some centurion multi-buck [its buck and ball, very devastating], however, before i got that mossberg, i would load the bolt action savage i inherited with win 2 1/2" slugs, an 87.5 gr solid lead projectile going st 1800 fps, is very devastating, and in a bolt .410, accurate as a rifle with the recoil of a .22 mag, and the sound of a, well really loud, lol

I am now using Rem. 12 GA. 2 3/4" #4 Buck Shot in my Mossi 590A1, because I have an old Browning Pump & a Charles Daily over & under both 2 3/4" only Chambers.
