This was bought as a combo... I got it a few years ago for like 300 bucks... Now the cheapest I can find the same combo is 430 bucks... I love my shottie... I will check the stamping on the slug barrel later and come back to let you know what I find!

The slug barrels are usually cylinder bore (no choke).

I use a Remington 870 pump tactical shotgun for my needs. I use 00 buckshot at very close ranges, across a room or under 15 yards and slug rounds out further. In shotgun training we made slug round hits on paper silhouettes out to 100 yards with our shotguns and blew apart targets under 15 yards with the 00 buckshot rounds. Trap loads were used for some practice sessions. After 5 days of shooting a shotgun, your shoulder is badly bruised and hurts like all get out! But such training is good for you and it impresses upon you how deadly and effective a good shotgun can be.

I've got Remington Super-X 00-Buck 2-3/4" 9 pellets in my Mossberg 590A1.

Are specialty 00-buck loads for self defense REALLY better? That PDX-1? The TAP loads? The they make the BG stop even faster? I wouldn't think so, but just asking.

I can imagine specialty .410 loads making a difference out of a Judge. But 9 huge pellets will make a huge affect if placed well.

I stick to 00 buck, although I hear 1 or 0 can be used effectively for SD, they have a lesser chance of over-penetration hurting family/others.

I wouldn't use any non-lethal/less lethal rounds (exception noted below) because I figure that if I find myself in a position where I have to shoot, it's because it's necessary to do so to save myself or my family. If that's the case, then I mean business! I don't make the decision to shoot lightly, so if I do it it's because there is no alternative.

Exception: I have considered using a lesser round (like birdshot) as the first round and then double aught for the rest as a just-in-case.

Reason: In Canada we have to prove that the force used in SD was necessary, otherwise we (as the victims) can be charged with various crimes; the lighter first round gives me the ability to say "he was warned" after I follow up with 4 more 00.
With the birdshot an accidental discharge in the house may not be fatal, and it covers me from the LE in SD scenarios. If an intruder takes a load of birdshot, doesn't get the message and still comes at me, then I figure more force is justified. If they stop good - and I'm safe from LE saying I went excessive.

Because of the world of computer cookies, my Able's Ammo shopping cart (and everybody else's) was empty. What particular round were you suggesting for SD use?

I just had a chance this weekend to finally break-in my new Mossberg 590A1 and zero in the red dot sight. I just used Winchester Super-X 00Buck 2-3/4".

Somehow I knew that would happen. Two loads, Federal 3" 12 pellet 00 buck with flitecontrol wad & Brenneke Black magic magnum. They're both very heavy for the job but it makes them more versatile.
