History Channel's Mountain Men

Are you guys watching this? Which of the three guys do you think has the best set up or is most likely to have to give up the lifestyle? Watching this has me searching for real estate in northern WI, my home state.

I personally think Marty has "the plan with the most holes". He started his annual pilgrimage before he had kids. His camp seems the most crude. He also appears to be one mechanical failure away from doom.

I haven't watched the second episode yet. So far not too impressed. Haven't seen any real mountain man skills.
Already tired of hearing that old guy cry about bears and his stupid dog.

I watched an episode where the one guy's (not sure of his name) snowmobile broke down 10 miles from his cabin at night. He had to go on foot, but was concerned with grizzlys and wolves and he didn"t bring a firearm like he usually does. Now, why would he not bring his gun?....I think (like most of these shows) a lot of it is contrived and staged for dramatization. However, the show does hold my interest...for now.

ive not scene it. but whats this talk of mechaniacl things and snowmobiles? i used to camp a lot. and i always used, flint, steel, and char cloth to start fires. my arms were the only mechanical device i had. even used a canvas tent with branchs for poles. sounds to me like this is nothing like real mountain men.

Yeah its not re-enactment or rendezvous stuff. It's just guys that still live out in the mountains. I'm still waiting to see some real skills like hunting or trapping etc.

Yeah, if you live in bear country, dont cry when the bears are roaming in your back yard....they dont understand property boundries!! Besides, they sure dont seem to be living all that remotely and those houses are pretty modern looking. Looks more like a very high dollar community then a remote outpost.

Yeah, thats episode 2. I was asking the SAME thing...if your in the wilderness and you KNOW you have wolves and grizzlies and other dangerous critters about, it seems to my (in my insane way of thinking) that the FIRST piece of equipment one would have when walking more than 2 feet from the cabin would be a high powered rifle! But thats just me.

In the first episode his sled broke down 10 miles from home as well...twice in two episodes it broke down

I am not for thinking i will be watching this show for much longer.

Tom, the old guy in MT with the dumb dog and the grizzly in the yard seems too close to his neighbors and friends to be a real mountain man. Hes a rural man in a state with mountains. When local fish and game agents give you electric fencing... kinda takes away from the wild-ness of your situation.

So take it Eustace on Turtle Island has no gripes from anyone?

mountainman13 06-08-2012 01:10 PM

Yeah a real mountain man would already be making a blanket, candles, dinner, tools and a necklace out of that bear for threatening his livestock.
