Guns as a hedge against SHTF

So, I have bought and sold many guns over the years, mostly due to it being and on & off hobby. Now, with everything that's going on, it seems there might be something to owning a few in case something happens. (This could take various forms, financial meltdown, SHTF, food shortages, Govt. Gone Wild, ect.) I started with 2 I already had, and decided not to sell them; Ruger Single Six in 22LR & WMR, and a Ruger 22/77 in 22LR.

In addition, since these 2 are not exactly going to fill the bill, I came up with this list for the following needs to be met;

1. Hunting for food
2. Defending the home
3. Defending yourself, out-and-about
4. Defending yourself against the hordes, in the home or O&A, I see a need to be able to fill a sniper's role.

So, here is what I think WILL fill the bill;

1. 223 bolt action (maybe a slightly bigger round), to take up to deer-sized animals.
2. Done- I bought a Mossberg 500 410 pump shotgun.
3. Beretta 96A1 40S&W. I used to have one, regret selling it every time I think about it.
4. MUCH larger caliber bolt action, I'm thinking 50 BMG this sounds like it will fill ANY sniper roll, although possibly overkill for NH terrain. This will be the last one filled, if ever, cause of the cost.

The biggest roadblocks to this is $, and the Wife, who is somewhat anti-gun. (But had surprisingly little to say about the shotgun recently)
Feel free to comment or add suggestions to any of this. It's a Work in Progress.

I don't think you need the 50BMG esp if money is an issue as you posted. Remember, you need to feed it too ;)

A cheap but accurate .308 hunting rifle (less than $400) should be sufficient in most cases. You also combine 1&4.

That add a semi-auto (maybe a .223 AR?) and you will be much better of than your original list.

JMHO.

I would have gone with at least a 20 gauge in the shot gun area but agree with above post that 1 and 4 could be combined. I'd stick with the .308 though. Just my opinion.

keep the thuty thuty loaded

Got the thuty thuty loaded and by the bed. have many rifles and lots of bullets loaded. live in the bush in northern bc canada. also have a 300 weatherby and a 338/378 weatherby with a tactical leupold 6.5-20 scope on top can reach out to 1000 meters and beyond.

Well, I went with the 410 because I don't need the distance in the house, and from what I have heard/read it's a very potent round at extremely short ranges. Also, it should help to keep over penetration of the house down to a min. As an added bonus, it's a VERY small gun, good in tight spaces, and low recoil, (I hear, haven't shot it yet.) This could only help with the Wife thing, she could use it, too.

I'll look into the combine 1 & 4 thing. And 308. Don't know much about that caliber.....Any suggestions on a gun to fit the bill?

Also, BTW, I'm trying to keep to common stuff, ammo & guns, so parts & ammo availability aren't a problem.

I personally bought a .308 Weatherby Vanguard (or Howa 1500). Based on a lot of recommendations, other good contenders are Savage Axis and Marlin XS7.

I feel the same but this does not compute w/ your initial consideration for 50BMG ;).

You can have .308 semi-auto like FAL, M1a, AR-10, CETME, Saiga, etc.

I happen to like Brownings so a Browning BAR Mark II Lightweight Stalker or a Browning BLR Lightweight '81 if you like a model 94 lever action type. Both can be had in .308 caliber.

I'm going to suggest that you also consider a .30-06 bolt rifle, not just .308.

My list:

.22 or .177 air rifle @ 1000 fps minimum
.22LR Rifle and plenty of ammo
9mm semi-auto hand gun/guns
5.56X45/.223 rifle, either a bolt gun or semi-auto AR or Ruger Mini-14
12 gauge pump or semi-auto
.308 heavy barrel bolt gun, with good glass

For me this is the perfect SHTF arsenal.
