Same at the Cabelas up here as well. I went looking for some #3 buck for my 20 gauge, and there wasn't a single box of buckshot for a 20 in the whole place. Nothing but rifled slugs!
Of course, it is hunting season up here, but still...

They did have stacks and stacks of that Royal Buck for $3 a box, but only in 12ga.

They had a LOT of bulk packs of the popular calibers (9mm, 223, etc) out for the holidays though. Some damn good deals this time of year.

Honest answer...because I'd never fired a shotgun before, and I was hoping to get something my wife would shoot as well. From the reading I did on turjey hunting boards and forums, 20ga is plenty for turkey (the 16lb bird I harvested this spring can attest to that ), and so it was plenty for me.
I did finally get the wife out to shoot the shotgun, and she hates it with a capital H, so that reason was blown out of the water.
I've thought about trading in the 20 towards a 12, but just can't justify it right now, since I'd be taking a loss on the 20 when it's performing its primary purpose (turkey hunting) just fine. Primary for home defense goes to our handguns.

if you are going to bother with anything except .22's, more than a few hundred rds is a horrific waste of money and space,. if shtf, you'll probably just have to abandon nearly all of it, so why bother? get some primers and reloading gear/ability, tho. Much, much cheaper and less wasteful of space.

I think it is time for some people to realize that all that ammo will go to waste if World War 3 happens. There's not going to be people coming to your doors. There's gonna be bombs dropped.

Now if you have a way to survive the Apocalypse, then all that ammo may come in handy.

As for type if ammo:

Hollow Point for pistols
Steel Penetrator Green Tip for AR
