My first smart ass thought was, "whatever has the most meat".

But as a true dog lover, I don't think SHTF would figure heavily into my equation...apart from it being a smart, working/sporting type dog. Get something that suits your lifestyle.

I guess if you want tough, smart, resilient, low maint, high endurance...a Rhodesian Ridgeback comes to mind. They're 100lbs of lightning fast muscle, can run and jump with the best of 'em, highly intelligent, and they were bred to hunt and corner lions...yes, African lions. Literally. But any working/sporting dog will do for me, including a plain old Lab.

Note: If you have to carry it in your B.O.B., it does not qualify as an actual dog.

Now, as a serious calm surrounds me, my heartbeat slows, I feel a peace, My sense of smell sharpens, my ears perked. If I had a tail I would wag it.

So. . . I told you all that I had some good dogs. Here they are sniffin' for coons.

Couldn't find the other picture (my son and I holding the varmint, post hunt)

I love my little lap dogs. The Papillon is as tough as my Border Collie, only smaller. And I would carry my Pug a thousand miles in my backpack if I had to.

I think mutts are the best. My dog is named ammo and is lab/Pitt mix. He's not that trained at all but very loyal, offers allot of protection, not too big, solid muscle, kills birds, kills cats, kills squirrels and listens.

Best part I rescued him and he was free.

I've owned two dogs in my life. My first was a Rottweiler and Lab mix. She was about 45 lbs. loved to play ball. Can't remember ever hearing her bark. Great dog.

My second dog, the one that is a part of my family now is an Akita and Lab mix. Best home defense dog I've met. She is the best with kids and women, but males? Forget about it. If she sees a guy near our house the fir on her back stands straight up and this low tone growl is audible to 15 20 yards. Any closer than that and she has a bark that makes me nervous. But in public she is great. Walks right passed every guy she encounters. She has a kennel in our living room that she sleeps in at night and I'd know if anyone would ever step foot in my house.

Whatever dog you decide to get. You absolutely have to crate train them.

Just saying in a shtf scenario if I needed food he would have no problem chasing down stray cats to kill for food for him or my family if shtf that bad. Not that he has ever killed a cat or another animal but would if I needed him to.
