Does it really work? The BOB edition

You probably did it.

You bought stuff, threw it in a backpack, and named the backpack BOB.

Maybe you were shopping at Wallyworld, saw something you figured would be useful, and tossed that in, as well.

It's insurance. But is it good insurance? Or just "feel good" insurance?

I aim to embark on product testing. And more importantly, I ask you to join in.

Open your BOB, and actually try a product. Post the results here. If you find an awesome deal on a tried and true product, let us know.

If the product passes, we may all need one. If it fails, we may need to make room in the bag...

So here's what this looks like...

The Orion Search and Rescue flare.

The product promises to burn bright red for 5 minutes, at 2000 degrees.

It's 5 1/4" long, and sold in two-packs at WalMart for about $5.

So maybe rescue is close, and I need to signal.

Or maybe I need to start a fire.

Do these little mini road flares work?

I gathered some dry and wet green leaves.

And I got a bright red flame, and fire....

So...

Bottom line, these work pretty well.

They do what the package says, I timed it, it burned just under 5 minutes.

My only concern would be keeping them dry, but worth the weight in the bag.

Good point, and they do tell you that on the package.

Good insurance, though.

If you have a bob bag, wouldn't you have a couple of bic lighters and some sort of tender. That way you are not using a dedicated signal in case of searchers are close by. Although if you are cold and shivering I could see using your flare since small muscle movements are difficult in that situation. Good review !
