I've had great success cutting down aluminium arrows. I just heat the tip lug and pull it out with pliers, cut down and re glue the tip. Then grind the knock down on a bench grinder. Wait till after archery season and get them red tagged at wally world for 50 cents apiece.
Its cool being able to experiment, I have a better distance/accuracy with bolts cut between 14 and 16" with a standard target tip, but the heavier broad tips like between 10-12 inch bolts.

The draw on my crossbow is 175 lbs, There's ways of cocking with out using the stirrup. butt to chest, butt to pit. Experiment with it. Damn, not to long ago I was looking at some crossbows in a cabellas catalog and one had an auto drawing feature that used a 9oz co2 tank.

Crossbows are just fun.

I have shot Horton crossbows all my life and love them. Don't spend more then 450 for one. To to cheperthandirt and check there prices out. I wouldn't get anything under 150lbs draw.

Comparing a Compound Bow against a Crossbow is like you trying to out shoot one of my Long Range rifles with your Bow. It just blowing smoke!
Your missing the whole point of the thread,It was a question about Crossbow's,not a Comparison test against them.

Crossbow's are a great tool for hunting or survival in certain instances or situations, they are not the perfect tool for everything. Nor is any other weapon.

Horton makes a pretty decent crossbow, but telling someone to not spend more than $450 on one, will really limit your selection.
There are a bunch of brands that I like better than Horton, but the Vision 175 fit my want's & need's. But you couldn't even come close to getting one when I bought mine under $650.

I set my limit for a Crossbow at $1k for everything, and really wanted to get the PSE Tac-15,but I couldn't get one for under $1200,and that was just the upper unit.

How much did you spend all together?

you got to admit though, that TAC-15 is one cool-looking mother.

There are lots of videos on YouTube for making DIY crossbows out of PVC.

If you are thinking of crossbows as a last ditch SHTF backup then this could make a fun project that develops a useful skill to have. The one in the video is functional - 100 lb pull and it holds the bolt in place even while upside down. As an added bonus, practice heating the PVC over a wood fire instead of using a heat gun :-)
