Ditch diggin is a hard way to get supper. You can make a fish trap with a bunch of little sticks and use it for days, IF you have moving & shallow water.

Shovel the fish on the bank with the shovel. A lot of fish I have gigged I know I could have shoveled them on the bank. A gig works better but a shovel will do in a pinch.

yes, you can "slap" the water with the back of the shovel.. long handled round point is the most versatile type. you can trench into the dam of a small pond, draining MOST of it, catching gators, beaver, muskrats, turtles, snakes as they try to flee. leave a foot or so of water, and be ready to trap and shoot cats and dogs and other predators as they come to feast on your fish. can also create a little side stream, off of a main stream, and some fish will enter it. shut if off, and they are trapped.
