A couple years ago I made a smoothbore black powder pistol so powerful that it fired a .52 caliber ball through a 4x4 fence post. I always had the idea of mounting it somewhere facing a door & wiring a battery & switch to it.

Well, Scratch, keep wondering. What you have described is known legally as a "spring gun". In every state I know of, setting one is a felony with a LONG prison sentence.

The original spring guns were swivel mounted guns, with a string run at knee heighth- walking into the string caused the gun to swivel towards you and fire. Set by the head Ghillie to take care of the bleedin' poachers that were after the Laird's fine fallow deer (or rabbits, or grouse, or salmon)

It would be illegal if used as such but an intruder should be more worried of the Mossberg. This one was for the 4th to make a lot of noise in the country & used a battery & filament.

If I remember correctly I think they were blunderbusses I'd hate to be the poor sob that sets it off.
