Right now I'm thinking a suppressed .22lr is the way to go. I got a Ruger .22/45 but I haven't got the suppressor yet. It's on the "to get" list for this year. I'm not exactly thrilled with the gun, but I have to admit it is extremely accurate and will be pretty nice with a suppressor.

My thinking is if I'm down to a pistol as my primary weapon I don't want to draw any attention to myself.

The P-35 and P226 -- you guys are arguing about my two favorite handguns. I love them all equally. Now go in peace my children.

Well now , that was "STELLAR", a top shelf thread at least !
I have mixed emotions and a diverse collection of brands and calibers.!
Glocks , Beretta , Smith&Wesson , Marlin , Remington and 45-70 , 10mm. 9mm.
.45 ACP , .22 LR , Sheeeeez..! In bear country , I'm taken the 45-70 with a 10mm. back-up !

Small game , I'm taken the 9mm. and .22...!

This is really a good thread , should be a "STICKY"..!

The .45 , just cause I can..! Classic !

Good point, but take .357 add .38 and toss in .40, and those combined are no where as near as popular (readily available) as 9mm.

Kinda doubt a short would have enough power to operate a semi-auto.

TLuker --- What don't you like about the 22/45? I have one. I love those Ruger Mark III's.

MHO you understand, if you're talking about a sho nuff SHTF handgun, you've got to consider the availability of ammo. Most law enforcement and military still use 9mm. That'll be available, by hook or by crook. Should the S really HTF, other arguably superior cartridges won't be around and I seriously doubt any of us will have the luxury of being able to sit at our RCBS single stage knocking out our personal favorite loads

The best one is the one I have on me when SHTF. Be it my 1911 or glock 17 or any of the other guns I carry. If I can't get to my other guns that is what will get me through. More important is making sure you always have enough ammo so that you don't run out when the zombies are coming
