Best SHTF handgun, has to be measured in your ability to:
1: Hit your target
2: How many times you can quickly hit your target
3: How quickly you can reload, so you can continue hitting your target
4: How damaged is your target
The handgun also needs to be as close to indestructible, as possible. Does no good to go to the dance if the fiddlers bow strings pop.
For me, having looked at and shot a lot of handguns, (retired gun dealer) the Glock 20, 10mm is the handgun that fills my shopping list best.
I run plus 2 extensions on original high capacity mags, that means I have 18 + 1 in my handgun, of 10mm. My holster has one additional mag holder, so I have 37 rounds of 10mm with me at all times.
Nothing beats the destructive power of 10mm. Whatever gets shot with one, stays shot.
Then look at the Glock handgun itself. Won't win any prizes for looks. Pack it in sand, saltwater, freeze it in a block of ice, and throw the ice off of a three story building to break it out. Then throw the bare gun off the same building. It still shoots. No other gun will take that abuse, that I know of. After the abuse, it still looks the same.
I have had my 10mm, 20 plus years. Still looks the same. Always shoots, never a problem.
I use a Safe-T-Blok, to add an additional safety, making it a perfect handgun, for my needs.

Im still stickin' to my gun.... Even though its broke..... In its defense, it took 5 rds of super hot 9mm reloads before that happened... :sigh: it would be good again if I could find a hammer and firing pin... Im sure I would be picking the pieces of gun outta me, if it was a "lesser" gun..
One of the 9mm rds.. Now im sad again..

Whatever primary sidearm you choose, I recommend a .357 (older S&W, my preference) revolver as a secondary. Low-tech, hard to break, handles .38 spl. ammo w/ ease. A 4" barrel can be used for PD and hunting (out to 30 or 40 yards, like a bow) w/ practice. Easy to find ammo & plenty of parts (& guns) if SHTF and commerce and transportation never or slowly recovers. Just sayin'.

Not true. If Jesus fired a pistol, I can promise you it would be a Sig P226. If I could only have one pistol, it would be that one. And not even God will be able to help the poor dumb sunuvabitch that would ever try to take it from me. He would not even be able to help a government that tried to take it from me. But I will give you this much.....that sure is one hell of a damn fine looking pistol.
