I give up, there is no hypothetical situation that I can make up that you can't refute. I personally would hypothetically buy the hypothetical 1911 and then save the rest of that hypothetical money for a hypothetical Hi-Power.

I finally made it to the most recent page. *whew* those last two pages were starting to wear on me. I don't know why we're debating carbines vs handguns? The OP clearly made this thread about handguns. So stop going off topic, please, and go with his post. Make a new one to debate carbines and handguns, por flavor.

That being said...

1. Is it reliable and able to withstand tough conditions and hard use?

2. Is ammo readily available?

3. It is versatile -- can be used for both hunting and self defense?

When I look at these questions, I come up with two choices: a .357 magnum revolver (simple, rugged, can shoot the widest variety of ammo -- from light target .38 to heavy, Buffalo Bore type hunting rounds); accurate at longer distance; and simple to operate. Okay, GI Joes, it ain't sexy, but it makes sense.

My other choice would be a good .22 revolver for most of the same reason listed above, but with the added benefit of being able to carry a ****load of ammo. 1000 rounds of .22 is do-able to carry around. I'm not so sure about 1000 rounds of centerfire ammo.

The issue as I see it are what will best help keep me alive, not what can I kill the most people with.
I once again completely agree with you, possum. My first choice is a S&W model 627. 8 rounds of .357 Magnum? Yes I will.

My second choice, and perhaps as a backup to my backup, would be a Kel-Tec PMR-30 because it has 31 rounds (with the +1) of .22 WMR. Perfect for small game hunting. In fact, if I really needed to, it would be good enough against a man. If I'm close enough to use a handgun against someone I'm gonna aim for the head anyway if at all possible.

No, I don't own either handgun yet. But more and more lately, I want a 627. Maybe someday...

I said a 627, but a 327 is also a definite contender because of its minimum weight. Still has 8 rounds of .357 Magnum.

I own many types of handguns. My choice for an "End Game" handgun would be a Ruger Old Army. The ROA with a .45 ACP conversion cylinder could utilize a common handgun cartridge. The percussion cylinder can use black powder or small charges of smokeless. Perc caps are easy to make from beverage cans and black powder can be made that will work. Bullets can be cast from anything that will melt.

Colt.or a Glock? Drop both off a three story building onto concrete and see which one still shoots, and what each one brings on gun broker.

Personally, I have very little interest in any firearm with a single stack mag. I guess it would be OK if one lived behind the iron curtain of NY and can only have seven rounds anyway.

I still live in free America, and with choices.
