Chambers three calibers so no ammo is no excuse.

Pump Action Shotguns - Model 887 Shotgun - Remington Shotguns
Chambers every 12 gauge shell there is & still has a short barrel & three choke tubes.*

But here my .02 the 2 3/4 12 gauge or 3 because these will fit most any shotgun

Other consideration may be an ammo round you can use again and again such as a bow and arrow. Seemed to work well for Native Americans.

I actually do have a compound bow and arrows for it. It is very effective, not too noisy and you can re-use the arrows. Didn't serve the Native Americans so well but I'll keep them around (the Native Americans as well as the bow and arrows).

Personally I would prefer to have a variety of guns available to make use of any ammo I can scavenge if I don't get a firearm with the stash of ammo. Make the best of the worst situation.

I think less important isthe 12 g though. There will be a lot of shells around but i think 90% of them will be bird shot. And that's good for one thing only, the bird-pocalypse.

I would put .22 lr on there but that's also a smei-useless round.

more ammo = yes
but doesn't hit hard enough to kill much above small dogs and cats.
