I would think the most valuable ammo would be whatever your best gun uses. In terms of just general value, I would think that other things such as food will have more value than ammo. So if you're thinking of collecting something of value just in case things go bad, I would recommend food stores and seeds. Seeds are a lot cheaper than ammo and will produce something that will be more valuable. Of course if you had something as valuable as food if things ever went really bad for an extended period, that ammo for your best gun would probably be more valuable to you than anything else.

Sorry, I got really off track with the previous reply. (It doesn't pay to post a quick response while doing something else.) Personally, I would make sure that I had plenty before things went really bad. It wouldn't be a bad idea to be prepared to reload ammo. There would likely be a lot of available components such as brass and lead simply because so many wouldn't have the skills and equipment needed to use those components.

i have gun with LOTS of ammo.................u have gun (and ammo) with LOTS of food...................NOW I HAVE LOTS OF FOOD (to go with my ammo).
