Default Ammo

I have been stocking up some ammo like the mk318 and m855 and m193. But wouldn't it be better to have soft point ammo like you hunt deer with? I know it cost a little more but would it not be a better defensive round. Example Speer 64 gr gold dot, federal fusion, and so on. If that is the case I want to stock up on this kind of ammo rather than the military kind right. I do have some 77 gr buffalo bore jhp and black hills 77 gr OTM, but most of my ammo so far is mk318. I think I will start getting more soft point ammo unless I an wrong. Please let me know.

I would say that you have ammo for both defense and hunting then you are covered.

I think 9 out of 10 times you're better off with a soft point lead bullet. The full metal jackets help with penetration, which is important for such a light round, but a soft point is many times better for everything else. I've been buying FMJ's just because of the price difference and being able to buy in bulk, but I save the brass for reloading with soft points. I'm getting ready to load my first batch of .223's this week and that'll give me a good mix of both.

I shot a hunting round (soft point) 30-06 through a quarter inch steel plate, through a weld, 80 yards. The hole was so clean it looks like it was drilled.

Any .223 or better you tag an opponent with will take him out of the fight. If you're asking about a more general-purpose round, yes, a soft tip or hollow point is more apt to do more tissue damage than a fmj.

Yes, you can get all of those with a soft point but it will cost more.
