I am hunting. Small game with my .223 when a grizzly threatens me. Do I use my .223, my 44 S&W, or my pepper spray? [Please answer only if you have actual bear or hog experience with .223, 44mag, or pepper. Üninformed opinions and guesses do no help me!] |

Unless your .223 is full auto, I'd swap to the 44 mag. Bear spray is useless - except to season pizza. __________________ AMAT VICTORIA CURAM

I read an article once that said statistically one is more likely to survive an encounter after using bear spray than after using a weapon.
Unless the .223 is an a high-cap AR and / or you are an amazing shot who can place that little 55gr bullet in just the right spot to drop him (eye? snout? I dunno) while he's charging, I'd draw the .44. But, if you've got 15 rounds left in an AR and don't have the time to transition to your .44, I wouldn't hesitate to put half a dozen rounds into its face! |

bear spray, .44 backup. .223 is like a mosquito to bears and crackheads. |

well i dont have exprience but i was thinking along those same lines. if im walking with my rifle at the ready and get charged the time it would take me to lower my rifle draw and shoot my pistol. id rather just bring up my rifle and pop off 20 rounds before the impact |

depends on what your doing, in many cases in Alaska you have to file a defence of life and property form when a bear encounter happens and if one is killed you actions will be reviewd by the State Fish and Game cops and if your found to be running a dirty camp or spoiling for a encounter you may get a citation.
Pack somthing big and be familure in its use, .44mag 300gr at least.
so Far Ive been doing Maintence in a area of NW Arctic for last 7 years and we have all 3 Blacks, Browns and Polar, have had couple run ins with bears one Black and one Brown, if you can avoid a bear thats best, the Pepper Spray works great if you nail them in the face & eyes, after discharging leave the area immediately, Bear Spray is a Bear attractant to other bears. |

ive read news article about at least one eskimo using a M16 to kill a polar bear but he used a full 30round mag on full auto... __________________ "Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound." — L.
