1960's Flashback!

An interesting article about the discovery of a 1960's bomb shelter that was opened for the first time since it was stocked over 40 years ago.

That is cool! Too bad it flooded, but wouldn't it be neat to have?

One of my neighbors has a fallout bunker, but it is an above-ground cinder-block structure. I knew the guy who built it, he did a piss poor job of it. The current homeowner uses it as a pump room for their pool equipment and that is probably all it is good for. A good backfire from a car might blow it down!

Yea its amazing! The photos are something else.

Too bad about that shelter. I always told myself that if I ever had the money, a ahipping container burried in the ground a few feet would be my treat to myself!

Yeah, me too. I would probably build a reinforced concrete underground structure rather than burying a shipping container. They are not built to take any side loading to speak of, and the tops will cave if the load is not focused on the corners. It will work mind you, but I would prefer something that will stand the test of time (this story is a good lesson too: Allow for ample drainage!).

I would also prefer to build mine back into a hillside with ground-level access given a choice.

Here is my dream- they built this a few years ago up the road from me.

Thats pretty cool!

Hell, if I had the cash, my hone would be an underground shelter! 3 sides under, the 4th would have steel doors hidden in the face.
