Actually, it's from reading history books. When disaster strikes --AND THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF RESCUE -- people will be civil to each other with sharing of resources and helping. When there is NO HOPE OF RESCUE --> the strong
ALWAYS kill the weak and take their resources.
There was a show on PBS about a guy in the '50's that went up to the Alaska bush to live. He brought hand tools -- with out the wooden parts. Made the handles and then made a house. Whittled spoons, bowls, etc. Brought a saw blade -- made the wooden structure and ripped boards to make a table, etc. He lived well until he hit his mid 80's. Amazing what he was able to do alone.
If you want meat - either bring a gun and loads of ammo -- or arrow heads and MAKE the arrows and MAKE the bow and kill a deer and use the ligaments for the string etc.
WHEN the SHTF - an entire house, furnished with a fully stocked larder can be brought in a rucksack --> just some assembly required...and a few hundred hours of semi skilled labor.
