As to the op's question.

I have used a rem 700 in 243 with a bushnell 4x9 40mm with illuminated crosshairs. Took that one at 80 yards with hornady super performance 95gr soft tips.

I will be taking my mossberg 100atr 30-06 this year. Using handloads, still have to load them eek. If i cant load then i will use hornady super performance 165 polymer tips.

Well I don't know much about hunting. The desert I was thinking of is the American West, not the Sahara. There's all kinds of animals running around ours. Besides, the point was; What is your hunting topography like? I might make a difference in your choices.

open field 550 yds wide by 1120 yds long. most shots occur within the 350 yd range.

everyone hunts with various rifle calibers: .243, 6mm, .308, .270, .30-06, 7mm;

everyone hunts with various rifle scopes: 3 - 9 x 40mm (mostly), but there are a few 3 - 9 x 50mm, 3.5 - 10, and 4 - 12 powers too.

as for types and kinds of rifles and scopes..........take your pick.

Ive hunted several different states and found throughout most of them my shot distance was pretty steady at fifty to one fifty yards. Oklahoma was a different story. If you wanted to you could shoot distances of sixteen hundred yards. Though I don't know of a single ethical hunter that would try that. My longest ever shot was about three fifty. And my shortest? Well it was a mercy killing. A button buck had been shot but it was an idiot that took the shot. He literally walked right under my stand then laid down about five feet from the tree.

The idiot thought it a wise idea to try for a head shot, and took the things jaw apart.

Sad
And while i am confident in my ability to make an easy head shot from a bench, there are to many variables when hunting to do that, i stick to heart and lungs.

Psh?

80 yards with irons is nothing to psh about.

Especially in a hunting situation, irons are more difficult to place exactly on the vitals. And with the recoil of an -06 80 yards is pretty damn good with irons.

How far have you killed a deer with irons?
