We have a 600 yd shooting lane on one spot on our land. A couple 200 yd shots. And many many many locations at 100 yards or less. This is only because this land is used as a logging resource. Otherwise, it would be 40-60 yards at most.

Maine is usually 100yards or less and many places less than 50yards in the woods. This lends itself to shotgun either slug or buckshot (00). I plan to hunt the powerlines where there are places you can see 400-500 yards. As I have only practiced to 200yards, my ethical Max with a perfect little to no wind, no movement, good solid rest shot is 300yards with my .308 savage axis with 3-9x40 Bushnell scope. Sighted in 1.5 - 2 inches high at 100 yards. This gives me a kill zone shot "dead" on from 0-200 yards (zero is technically 190yards according to ballistics) and just a slightly high (on or inch above the spine) hold for 300yards. Working on accuracy and distance with my Mosin Nagant and open sights to see if it's a viable choice in my area, so far I'm good to 50yards, possibly 100 (only shot it one day).

I much prefer open field hunting with an '06 sighted in at 220 yds with a Bushnell 3X9X50. Occasionally I deep woods hunt with a 500 Mossberg with OO followed by a slug. Keep a 742 Carbine in '06 handy for all occasions of any kind.

Most of my shots are from stands overlooking game trails or hunting againist the wind on windy days. The vast majority of my deer shots are <75 yards. In 2008 i made my first >300 yard shot in many years: Killed a big doe at a lazed 418 yards.

I don't much about hunting. It might help if you stated where you expected to be hunting, boreal forest, open desert, etc.

Deer do not live in deserts. They'd starve there. Just sayin'.

It's been over 22 years since I last hunt. However, if I remember correctly, I got most my deer meat 50 to 80 yards max with a Winchester Model 94 .30-.30 and iron sights. Hunt in the Sierras between 2500' to 3500' or so in elevation and in moderate to heavy brush.

Umm I believe mule deer live in desert areas. Not all deserts are just sand, they can eat fruits off catuses and things like that.

Not exactly deserts.
They live in a much "scrubier" (sounds silly, say it out loud) area than most deer.
You are right, nit all deserts are sand, but mule deer live in the scrubier (hehehe) and sparser areas if the west not the desert.
