In the bottoms 20feet to 125 yards. In the clear cuts from as close up 10 feet out to 400 with maybe 85 to 125 the majority.

Hi Davey. I like to keep it simple. I use a Marlin model 1894 lever action 44 mag with open sights. You'd be hard pressed to find a handier little rifle. Rather than cover an open field, I like to sit in the woods, so my shots are under 50 yards. But I practice a lot out to 100 yards.

Most important thing is to have a good time. I'd rather not get a deer but have a good time then to get a deer but not have a good time in the woods.

My deer last fall was 378 yards according to my GPS, one shot to the back of the neck. My shots are all over 250 and a few over 400 here in open country.

The woods are pretty thick here in north west pa. It's rare to have a line of sight of more than 75-80 yards. I did get one off of our island on the allegheny from the bank. Couldn't pace it off but I estimate about 200 yards

Out west in MT I shot up to 300 yards, but in Georgia where most of my deer hunting is done, the average is about 50 to 75 yards.

Every now and then on a rare occasion I get a 150 yard shot in open fields.

My shots are 30 to 300 yards. I use a Remington M700 5R in .308 with a 4.5x14x42 Burris. And the overwhelming majority of my deer are shot at 150 yards.

Where you live is a big factor but where you specifically hunt in your area and how you hunt is also a factor. I specifically look for places where I can see a long ways such as fields, clear cuts, power lines, and road beds. Occasionally I will hunt swamps and then my average shot is probably 30 yards. At some point you will figure out what type of area suits how you like to hunt and then that will determine how far you normally shoot.

Here in Bama,we have some long timber roads...could be at least 450 yds..most are around 2-300 yds...the trick is to spot the deer and make up your mind in about 3 seconds(crossings) I took one this year at 250 yds with in the 3 seconds....see a lot more game at road crossings(logging roads)

Deer hunting for more than 40 yrs. Average range is about 40 yards, from 5 yards to about 230 yards. Stand hunting in oak woods and field edges.

'Bout the same as BK. Have the rifles sighted in at 220 yds so "Kentucky" windage is easy out to 300. Have gone to a 25-06 so it is a lot simpler now.
