I have hunted in central Idaho for elk and deer for over 45 years. I can do a 400 yard shot. I have done many 200 yard shots. But I prefer the 100 yard shot or less. As my hunting skills got better, I got a lot more 100 yard shots.

Learn to hunt correctly, and you will not need the long shots.

Most of mine where 25 to 75 yards. I'm not walking farther than that to get it. Besides here in Ky if it's more than 100 yards it is someone else's deer.

I've always been told that most deer were taken at 75 yards or less. This interesting study by South Carolina's Dept. of Natural Resources says otherwise. The study was done on 4500 acres of "coastal plain". In the deep hemlock forest up here in NY it's rare that I see in any direction more than 50yds.

http://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/deer/articlegad.html

To sum it up. Avg. shot was 132yds with 82% success. Average reported missed shot was 150yds. Surprisingly, no difference in outcome based on caliber. 50% ran. 50% dropped. Shoulder shot was most effective. Soft expanding bullets were more likely to drop the deer and leave sign.

I live in the hills of central Ms. Shots can ran from 30yds. to 150 yds. I've been using a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39 with Federal 123gr. SP. the last deer I shot was at 175yds. the one before that was at 30 feet. both from a ladder stand.

Well, about the only thing I've killed with a knife is my chicken cutlet, so you've got me on that. As for yardage, I may not always get a shoulder shot, but I've got a 100% success at hitting trees, and no bag limit!

Only cause they're the size of dogs.
